On this day 52 years ago, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to fly in space. He completed three orbits of the Earth before landing in Siberia. Thanks to his efforts as well as those of his fellow cosmonauts and astronauts, we have put men on the moon, rovers on Mars, and probes beyond the edge of our solar system.
